My fiance has a cold (Man flu, obviously, he is dying!) and he asked me this morning why does only one nostril get blocked but the other does not? Does anyone know that answer to this?? Thanks! x

I have no idea why only one nostril gets blocked - random variation? One nasal passage is slightly bigger than the other? Who knows.

But one answerer said that blowing your nose helps. Yes, if it has lots of mucus, it can hep to get rid of some. But remember that your nose blocks due to the delicate blood vessels in your nasal passage and sinuses swelling up from infection - blowing your nose really hard can be painful and damage these vessels further, making them swell up more. So be careful with that!

Nostrils take turns at being blocked, they swap evey hour or so to even it out.
Im guessing it's so that u can still breathe through ur nose which is a better filter than the mouth to stop dust and bacteria getting into you throat which would make the cold worse.

maybe because he is prone to "one testicle block syndrome. This is said to affect the nostril as well. Generally such people marry females who have what is called as "one breast " syndrome.

He sleeps on his side, and the mucus is affected by gravity, if he alternates which side he sleeps on he can balance it out. Also, blowing your nose helps.
