You should do a routine maintenence scan every month.
Heres how.....
first of all when yo turn your computer on and you have the black screen, a white flashing line appears in the top left had corner of your screen, tap away at the f9 key untill you hear a beep. then select safe mode. Now go to your start menu and select search, enter cookies, select all and delete, system will not allow you to delete index cookie, this is fine. second search next for temp internet files, select all and delete, then empty your recycle bin.
Next go to accessories and select system tools, select defrag, this cleans up your hard drive and may take anything up to an hour. After you have done this select system scan, this will scan your entire system for any errors and repair them. this angain can take anything up to 3 hours. bot once you have done this you will see how much better and faster your system will work. After scan is finished close down your pc and restart in normal mode. This is routine maintenence which should be done at least once every month as well as down loading any updates.

the quick answer is that this: verify to work out in case you have Norton - that's a real perpetrator slowing down XP. Secondly, if your no longer working a minimum of 512 mg ram, that's not working ok. many human beings decrease corners with 256 and then ask your self why residing house windows is sluggish. you may defrag and cleanup - yet look at Norton first.... additionally AVG is unfastened and good.

There is no application with Win XP that would test everything. The best you can do is check your harddrives for errors.
Go to My Computer and right click on your hdd icon then select the second tab - Tools. Check the hdd for errors.
To check everything you'll need an application such as Fix-it, talk to your computer savvy friends and copy it from them.

im not sure if you can get an all in test, however ther are tests built into windows and ther are many utilitys you can download to check your manufacturer of motherboard, hdd ect.
to test your windows installation and fix any problems use chkdsk.
click on my computer, choose your main harddrive (usualy lacal disk C: from the open window and right click on it, then choose properties from the drop down menu. in the open window click the tools tab at the top, then click check now. in the new open window mark / tick all options and click start, a box will apear telling you that access to the dos part of the HDD is needed simply click yes and restart your computer, when your computer is rebooting windows will check the hard drive.
To check your mother board, memory, your hard drive further, and every aspect of your system. visit the manufacturers website that made the computer and look for any utilitys for checking your computer download them and run them. you can also find out what hard drive you are using I.E manufacturer, model number ECT and download ther own utilitys from ther website. to find out what hard drive you have try the following.
open control panel, click start, click control panel. in the open window click switch to clasic view on the left hand side. then find the icon marked system and click it. in the new window click hardware and then device manager.in the new window click disk drives and your hard drive will be listed as its model number, make a note of it and do a google search using that number this will tell you who made it and then visit ther site. For example mine is listed in device manager as HDS722540VLAT20 a google search tels me this is an Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 40 GB.
I hope this all helps

I'm a big fan of www.pcpitstop.com. You don't need to install or download anything, and it will completely scan your system, tell you big problems, like hard drive space, things that could improve your system a bit, and little tips for optimising performance. Recently they've recommended software on there, however it does have spyware, so please stick with the scan, take the tips and how to do them, but don't download "PC Optimise" or whatever it's called.

Usually if there is any problem the windows will give u an error.
U can check the computer hardware by right clicking the "my computer" and selecting manage, then select device manager, if any hardware is conflicing or is have any problem the willbe a yellow or red icon on that device.
if u want to use a software for this u can either use norton utilities or system mechanic. i use them to check hardware and software prob.
