A ski resort can manufacture enough snow machine-made snow to open its steepest run in 12 hours, whereas naturally falling snow would take 36 hours to provide enough snow. If the resort makes snow at the same time that it is snowing naturally, how long will it take until the run can open?

Please explain how you figure it out as well

In an hour, the machine will be able to do 1/12 of the job, and nature will do 1/36 of it. So with them combined, 1/12+1/36=4/36=1/9 of the job will be done.

Let 1 be the completed work, and 1/9 be the work done in an hour, you just divide:

1/ (1/9)= 9

So, the run can open after 9 hours.

Let's assume that natural snow comes down at a rate that we'll call 1 unit per hour, and that we thus need 36 units of snow. Then, since snow making provides those 36 units in 12 hours, we can assume that it puts out snow at a rate that is 3 units per hour.
(Here units is just a way of making both snow accumulation approach compare, a unit can be 0.14527 cm, or any other odd value, that does not matter).
With both the natural snow falling AND the snow making machines working, we then get 4 units per hour. And we need 36. 36 divided by 4 is 9.
So, that is your answer: 9 hours.

It is 3 times as quick to use the machine.

If r snow made per hour

naturally rt snow is made
but (3r)t is made by the machine in the same time.

If used together: rt+3rt = 4rt

So if naturally it takes 36 hours and using both methods together is four times as fast then

It takes 36/4 = 9 hours with both methods together.
