i have just read all the other answers ..and they are all wrong ! .in england if the glass is less than 800 mm above the floor then it must be toughened.. it will have the kite mark in the corner ..and all glass in doors and side lights should be toughened ..allthough they say if the glass is in very small panes then laminate is the way to go ..this only applies to doors

There are too many "area" codes to give you a correct answer. Check with your local Building Code office. Most require 18 to 20" above the floor to install non-tempered glass.

above kick height - a foot. Also it would depend on how large a sheet. A sliding door is toughened glass because of its size and the fact that the door could be slammed shut, or the wind could blow against the large surface and crack it.

The correct term is actually "tempered" glass. Check with your local building department and ask the question. Not all windows need to be tempered units.

The correct hieght is 800mm from floor and within 300mm of an opening door fensa rules from uk building regs part L

david is right, if the bottom of the window is less than 18" from the floor then the galss needs to be tempered
