Everytime I pick up the paper I read horrifying stories: a man stomped a 10 pound chihuahua to death, an ex-boyfriend cuts off the head of his girlfriend's dog, gift-wraps it and puts it on her porch, two teenage boys put a puppy in a hot oven and laugh as the dog struggles to get free, a man puts a puppy into a microwave and cooks it to get even with his girlfriend. I could go on but I want to DO SOMETHING. What can I as one person do?

I hear ya! There is a special place in hell for anyone who would harm an animal. I would not hesitate to stomp someone I saw abusing an animal.

Although they get a bad rap, PETA does alot for animals. You can also support the ASPCA and look for groups online that may provide a way to help protect animals. You might check in the Yahoo groups area to find some like minded people.

Here's a start. There is pending legilation which would make animal fighting (dog fights, chicken fights, for sport and betting) a FELONY. It is currently illegal but only a misdemeanor. Here's a web sit for you to fill out a form and send the email to your representatives. It's very easy. While you're there, you can look into other animal protection legislation being considered and send some of those emails out also. Emailing the representatives really DOES help. After hurricane Katrina, the reps were swamped with emails, phone calls, etc with people demanding FEMA also provice rescue services to pets. Now we have legislation which does just that.

Here's the web site. It only takes a minute! You want to do something? Here's your chance:

I agree, penalties for animal cruelty must be substantially increased . Many criminologists and law enforcement psychologists have concluded that a young person who has sadistic tendencies toward helpless animals are sociopaths in the making and parents of these disturbed individuals must seek help for them.
You can use the internet to form a group of people to petition your Congressman, State Legislator or Governor to update the sentencing guidelines for these offenses. These people have no place in society and must be protected from themselves.

Good Luck!!

Well, what you and other concerned people in your family or community can do is start an awareness campaign involving street plays or having sessions on these topics in your school or college. It might be frustrating at first in trying to get a sizeable audience but if you are really passionate about the topic and plan it well, who knows you , you can even make it to the front page.
GOOD LUCK

Call your local humane society and animal control/shelter. Talk to persons in charge and ask what you can do to make punishment harsher for those who commit such cruel acts and do harm to animals. I believe in my state it is a federal offense. So fines, and jail time is what they get.
