It gets a bit tricker with the currency. A medieval mark was 2/3 of a pound sterling, so 40 marks would be £26/13/4. However that was a very large income, since a day laborer would have been lucky to make 1d a day, or about £1/10 a year. In terms of purchasing power the Merry Men would earn roughly equivalent to an income in the US$70 - 80,000 range.
And, of course, since they were outlaws, that would be all tax free...so the equivalent for a modern American would be around US100,000 gross income
