Some public schools are really good, too, but there are others that are not so great. Before you buy a house, check out the public schools in the area. There can be a huge difference between neighboring schools, and it would be worth an extra 10 minute commute to live in a better school district. My parents lived on the border between two districts, so they had a choice of which one to send my sister and me to. One had lots of advanced classes and college-prep courses, the other had almost none, and it had a gang problem. Any guesses which one they picked?

If you can, actually visit the schools you are considering. Look at the facilities on the campus, talk to the administrators. Find out what each school offers and what the atmosphere of the school is. If there are not any good public schools, then consider private schools, but make sure they are accredited with the state. If they aren't, they might not have all certified teachers, or the diploma might not be accepted at all universities.

If your going to educate your child in America you definately need to stray away from public schooling. I would recommend charter schools. They are popping up all over the place. They offer smaller classes and a more condensed in motivating curriculum for your child. I enrolled my daughter in one 2 years ago and her growth is astounding. Her academic levels are equal to her public schooled cousin who is a full grade ahead of her. Charter schools are just more academically driven and usually chose something "real-world" based to drive their curriculum e.g. global studies, computer technology, buisness, and so on. Good Luck with your move.

It's generally a disaster.

A lot depends on WHERE you live.

I mean if you live in the rich suburbs the schools are still pretty good.

If you live in a small town the schools are decent.

If you're going urban and have enough money put them in a private school, prep school or a Montessori type school. Or home school them.
