Ozone is not necessarily better than chlorine pools. Chlorine if used in the correct manner is perfectly safe and will sanitize the water correctly. Many commercial facilities (Hotels, Public Pools, etc) are beginning to switch to alternative types of sanitation to reduce the maintenance costs of their facilities. Ozonation systems have an initial cost, but once you get past that cost the system pays for it self as it continually produces ozone. Chlorine Generation systems are also becoming very popular as they generate chlorine very cheaply by adding salt to the pool water. Salt costs much less than traditional chlorine. As for Ozone itself. Ozone is the strongest oxidizer available to help keep a pool clean. Also after the ozone oxidizes contaminates in the pool all that is left is oxygen. About the only drawback to ozone is that is usually requires some sort of additional sanitizer to be added as most ozonator systems are only capable to killing 60-80% of bacteria on their own. This usually means that something like chlorine or bromine is also being used, but in much lower doses than they normally would be used if they were being used alone. Chlorine if used in the proper levels will not cause any health issues.

The myth about it causing asthma is just that. Recently the CDC has begun to look into this concern as some studies were done over seas that linked swimming in a chlorinated pool. It was found that in the increased risk was actually linked to increased chloramine levels from not properly sanitizing and oxidizing the pool water. Another issue was that the pools were mainly indoor pools with improper ventilation systems. Again the swimmers were being exposed to the chloramine vapors trapped in the air.

The CDC has since begun to investigate the link between asthma and choramines, and has suggested new proceedures for oxidizing the water to prevent the chloramine build-up. This could be done through a Ozonator or by using a Mono-persulfate oxidizing chemical on a regular basis.
