Here's my favourite ballad - the best!: The House of the Rising Sun - song by The Animals
This is one set of lyrics but there are variations - very well known
There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
It's been the ruin of many a poor girl
And me, Oh Lord! was one

Lyrics are here. They also have the melody but whoever did the arrangment sucks. You can download the instrumental at the second link.

If you go to google and type in: "House of the Rising Sun" you will get tons of info.

I found a Wikipedia article on ballads, and it includes some of the more famous ones. You can try looking through the ones they listed and pick one you like.

(Note: The List of Ballads takes you to their respective articles. Some of these pages have the poem incorperated into the article and others have links to the poem in question. If the page contains neither, then you may need to search for the poem by typing its name into the seach engine.)
