in p2p (file sharing) a group of people are connected with each other through internet, there is no commom server were files are hosted, files are stored in the computers of p2p users. when you request a file, all the computer having that file respond, u recieve the file parts in random order from one or more host, finaly that file is constructed with the parts to get the exact file u requested to download. p2p can be very helpfull if u want to download large files.
a p2p software opens a TCP and/or UDP port in ur computer through which it communicate with other p2p computers in a network, so dont keep the default port configured in the program, as it is known to all and thus pose a security risk, change it to be safe.
p2p can be and many times is used for illeagal download or piracy, so there may be leagal risk if u do that and get caught.
the file u download may not be what they are made to look, like changed names, some may even contain virus or worms, u can never be sure, so do use a good antivirus. many p2p software have methods to verify the file u r downloading and that may help.
kad, edonkey, kazaa, gnutella are some examples of p2p networks, some have central servers to store the list of peers, other are serverless.
emule is a p2p software that is free and can connect to both kad and Ed2k networks, it is free and open source program.
note one thing, p2p can use lot of bandwidth if u dont control it in its options menu, as even if u r not downloading anything, there may be other users downloading from ur computer, files that u have shared.

hope that helps

Peer-to-peer pc technologies should not be banned. in case you're saying, the content cloth of P2P pc technologies is greater in direction of to copyright infringement activities, then P2P pc technologies could examine the content cloth of the sharing techniques and make useful that its not doing those activities yet not ban the entire Peer-to-Peer (P2P) pc technologies. Sharing techniques is a powerful concept, which many of the purchasers of pc makes use of it. If this technologies be banned, it would be a disaster because of the fact P2P technologies make us share records greater definitely. Futhermore, if those human beings had to proceed those activities, they might create a clean software to do it and banning the P2P technologies would be ineffective. So i don't think of this pc technologies could be banned.

Vulnerabilities of P2P technology is in p2p client programs which you are use. Because they: establish connection with another computers in net, open your network ports, giving a lot or not information about you to others. Way to control it...maybe to use firewall, but most of them won't say you what information exactly your p2p client sends.
But my opinion its not the thing to care of. Care of what you are downloading, what do you share, check everything with up to date antivirus software, be aware that all your internet activity is logged by your ISP.

they are a good way to get computer viruses or ways for a computer to get into your computer.
those are the main reasons.
Also 100% most of the files from p2p are illegal anyways.
