William WIlberforce was a Member of Parliament, campaigned with other members of the Clapham Sect as active Christians for the abolition of the slave trade. He also helped set up the Church Missionary Society.

He was a Yorkshireman and went to school in Pocklington. In 1780 he was elected MP for Hull and in 1784 MP for Yorkshire. It was John Newton, 30 years older than Wilberforce, who persuaded Wilberforce to be an MP rather than a clergyman - Newton wrote loads of hymns, including Amazing Grace (he was a former slave trader before he became an Anglican minister). That's the connection with the film title.
