in the modern world we have such a choice from sky, virgin media and internet but we are forced to pay this money to the bbc for channels that we are forced to pay for whether we watch them or not. why do we all put up with this.

Because it is the law.
You even have to pay the licence fee if you do not watch TV and only use it as a viewer for films or as a monitor for a PC.
The only thing that can be done is to form a group to apply pressure to the government and insist this law is unfair and demand changes.
Why should the BBC be given a FREE RIDE when all other channels have to get their funding through commercial means, IE. sponsored programmes and adverts

Because it gives us a choice of tv and radio channels that does not have to pander to advertisers and please an instant mass market meaning we have new / untested and often specialist programs / formats :

life on mars - (rejected by itv),
the office
Science/nature programs such the 'walking with' series

(the list is endless and would never see the light of day on ITV
unless they had proved successful elsewhere.

Compare with the likes of x factor, big brother etc of ITV or endless US imports from Sky and other satellite and pay tv providors.

If you look at the output from the bbc - tv, radio web etc you'll find it's actually pretty good value and far less than the most basic package from sky. The fact that the bbc is independant from big business means it can be far more innovative.

You'll also fing a lot of the repeats on sky especially good comedy and documentaries were first aired and comissioned by the bbc

List a US tv network that can boost such an offering.

Its a tax by another name. If the BBC did not have a licence fee they would have to be funded by the government out of taxation anyway. Every government has said that we have to have a national radio and TV service that is independent and is not subject to commercial control or influence. The government also gets money from the various other broadcasters by selling or renting the available transmission frequencies or bands. So you can no more opt out of this charge than you can income tax,VAT,council tax,car tax and whatever. Oh! yes you can ,this is one tax you can avoid, either scrap the TV and don't bother with one or put on a few years as you don't have to pay any more when you are 75.

if i am wrong then i'd hold my hands up, but isn't the UK the only nation in the entire world where people have to pay to watch tv? i agree it's a disgrace, especially the amount of rubbish that is shown on tv. thankfully though, i choose not to watch it. nobody should be paying for the tv licence- it's just another stealth tax by our greedy and selfish government that rises year on year out. and as it is funded by the licence payer via the bbc, hardly any programmes are worth watching on bbc1 these days

Yes, I agree it's a total disgrace, yes I do like BBC, but not at the expense we are forced to pay, I wonder what people in other countries pay for their TV licences. The thing is we have to pay double, once for TV lincece, then again monthly for satelite, it's a rip-off.

So we don't have to watch product advertisements on BBC channels. It's also "supposed" to ensure we get decent programmes to watch. Unfortunately this includes reality TV, Doctors, Neighbours, Eastenders etc

Because its the best, simple as that really !, i have no problem with paying it as the Quality of programs is second to none, no stupid mind numbing adverts either ?.
Plus its not just TV, you get dozens of radio stations, interactive TV, Web sites with TV and Music on it, pod casts, and of course some of the best Comedy, Drama & Nature shows in the world.
there's no way i would pay 40quid a month for sky or cable as its mostly cheap & tacky shows, repeats and endless adverts.

I don't know why we pay a TV license.

An other thing I was wondering when Chris Moyles was going around the country collecting money for red nose day who was paying for the luxury coach he used and when he gives CDs to people like David Becham an the like who pays for that?
