I've never been there and have some students who've lived there. I do understand that - like many countries - there's street crime and violence. A friend recently told me that it was a "totally violent country" and that life there is basically dangerous all the time.

It's a huge country and I can't believe that widespread violence is the norm. What is it like to live in various parts of Indonesia. Please be as descriptive and specific as possible.

definitely yes! indeed!
indonesia is a corrupt country! one of top 5 i think,....
i wont deny it, and saying to defend my country, but the fact is.. yes!!!
the government.. oh my God.. no need to explain.. lot of the general and government ppl are freaking rich!! i mean ... freeeaakkkiinggg riccchhhh!!! i know coz lot of my friends know them too..
everything is about the connection in indonesia.. if u want to open some business, import something, do something illegal or legal .. the only thing u have to do is only bribe them!!
get through the red traffic light? no problem.. bribe the officer! give them max 50.000 rupiah, ok go!
kill someone? drugs? illegal item? hmm.. u might think more about how much money do u have to bribe the judge and others..
tsunami? earthquacke? other mother nature disaster? wanna give some donation? its better if u go that place and give them directly, rather than donate to government or some places that has promises.. coz.. they promise to take some of your donations first to their OWN ppl.. aka steal .. aka corrupt...
no need to see other examples... see soeharto, one of the top 5 richest person in the world!! .. but his own country is poor country.. so ironic..

Look. Not all of indonesia is corrupted. You still have people who are still kind. Sadly the police are easily take bribes which is a shame... BUt who ever told you all of Indonesia is evil is full of $#!%... Damn american politics.... making people associated with religion dangerous because terrorists believe in Islam.... I hate this media brain washing. Visit Jakarta and you'll see people who are not so evil.

I dont know which part of Indonesia that your friend is talking about.
Yes there are some places that are still struggling in civil war or disputes between different religion and races such as Aceh, Ambon, Poso...other than that life is normal here in Indonesia.
Many says that it is most likely happen because of political issues...
However...Indonesia consist of many different tribes with different culture...small disputes happen...and of course we must also follow some survival rules such as dont talk to stranger...no walk in dark alley etc...
try to visit Indonesia sometimes ...you might love it
cheerss
