I was there seven years ago. Ethiopia is interesting country, but there is big difference between Addis and the rest of the country. The city is getting modernized, although it has large slum area. The very heart of the city has the infrastructure of a modern city, but the outskirts are full of shantytown features. A lot of Ethiopians don't have work or proper wages, so there is high level of poverty. Addis has a couple of luxurious hotels (namely Sheraton), nice restaurants, and excellent nightclubs. Also, there are beautiful churches (majority of Ethiopians are Christian Orthodox), a stadium, etc. Out of Addis, places that I know worth visiting are church of Lalibela, lake Langano, and capital of ancient kingdom, Gondar. I don't know where do you come from, but Europeans have to take vaccine shots against yellow fever, hepathitis, and take precautions against malaria. There are hospitals in Addis, especially a big one in the city, where most of the doctors and medics are Russians (experts). Living in Addis is safe, although, it's not recommended to drive out of the city by night.
People of Ethiopia are fantastic. Personally, I never had any problem with Ethiopians. They are very friendly, open, and good hearted. They are proud people, big patriots, family oriented, and, basically, they like foreigners to come over to their country. A lot of Ethiopians speak English, some can speak Italian. Also, they are very beautiful people.
Compared to western standards, prices are low in Ethiopia, but on the other hand, market is not very excessive. Maybe it has developed in last couple of years, but at the time I was there, it wasn't. You can find domestic food at a reasonable price (banana, mango, papaya), and a lot of low-priced Chinese products.
Also, in Addis, there is Armenian enclave who live there for a longer time, open-hearted people that you can enjoy their hospitality.
So, that would be couple of facts first-hand, and what can I say, I envy you that you are going there!
