Well to truly understand and appreciate Jamaica you will have to do both of them,as each has their own, high mark.
Negril is arguably the party capital of the west end of Jamaica,Montego bay is undisputed when it comes to being the tourist capital, and main hub,
but since you have ask which would be better or if there is another, let me tell you and you can decide.

Negril has 7 miles of white prestine beach, which is very beauti full, especially the reefs, brilliant sunsets, and some really romantic villas, stretching from bloody bay in Hanover to west end in Westmoreland,
activities, walk the beach all 7 miles there is always a party going on some were along the stretch,at nights, scuba diving excellent, jet skiing also available, jump from a cliff next to Rick cafe' which is great for swimming, enjoy the Royal palm reserve, only 1 of its kind in the entire world,(never new there was a little nature there did you),visit the light house and you can go party at the Margarita ville or Jungle, there is so much more, but i have to to keep this one short.

Montego bay,go night clubbing,whether at Magritte Ville or Cor all Cliff which is a restaurant and entertainment center,go browsing on Gloucester ave, lots of shops,check out Aqua sol,great for go cart racing and jet skiing,arrange for trip out to sea on a glass bottom boat,and see the wonder full coral reefs and etc;
You can also arrange for tree canopy tours or river tubing and rafting on the great river,or bird watching, close to readings Mobay, and last but not least pay a visit to one of the many great houses if you want to learn a bout Jamaicas history.
As for Beaches they are few,but good,Aquasol theme park,Doctars cave, Sunset beach and Dead end.
but Negril in my opinion is more touristy, well manicured lawns, clean and put together.

Have you decided yet?

OK check out Ochi rios, Duns river falls,Bob Marleys resting place in 9 miles St Ann,or go river rafting, river tubing(white river) or biking in the hills (down hill).

Or Portland but its a area noun only for nature quiet and laid back, swim in the blue lagoon, famous for celebs dipping there, raft on the Rio grande,or just go hiking trust me the views, just awsome, and the beaches more secluded, check out reach falls and somerset falls, and also the Blue Mountains, for history go to Maroon town, and on Nanny the only heroine of Jamaica 7.

Well hope that bit help, can t take up all the space got to leave room for others, but in my opinon check them all out,but if your in it for the parting every night go to Negril, for it would be your one stop shop.
Enjoy your self, just be open minded.

I have been to both. I very much prefer Negril, for the following reasons.
The sand in Negril, on the famous 7 mile beach, is so very fine that you are unable to pick up a single grain by itself.
The water is much, much clearer in Negril than in Montego Bay. The water temperature is also warmer in Negril.
Montego Bay is okay, but very tourist orientated. Negril has its pary scenes of course, but the quality, in my opinion is so much nicer.
I stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Montego Bay, which is very elegant. But, the cost of food and drinks was not included in the pricing, and was very expensive.
In Negril, I stayed at the RIU Negril Club Hotel, which is a 5 star resort. Everything is included in one price.
There are 5 restaurants on the property, a jerk shack on the beach, 5 bars, a bar on the beach, and a disco. There is nightly entertainment which is lots of fun. There are free programs for those who have children. The rooms are very clean. Each room has its very own mini fridge which is stocked daily with sodas, beers, water etc. There is also, in every room, a tap of hard liquor. Vodka, Gin, Rum, and I believe Whiskey. Remember, this is all included in the price.
The beaches are very clean, and there are also two pools, one with a swim up bar.
I highly recommend the snorkeling trip $15- which will take you out on the reef in a glass bottomed boat. The water is incredibly clear.
The only negative aspect, (which is very minor) is the shopping excursion. Don't fall for it. It only goes to places which the drivers seem to collect a commision on, and once you leave the airport on the way home, you will find everything you could possibly think you need to buy right there, and surprisingly, the prices are much less than the shopping trip.
I truly had the time of my life in Jamaica, and of course, Negril is where I will be returning this year.
Hope you have a blast! The experience is truly "soul cleansing.
The people are beautiful, very kind and helpful, so be sure to leave them a couple of bucks as a tip. One of our dollars is the equivalent of 11 of theirs. They can feed their whole family on $1-$2 dollars.
Enjoy!

Negril-HANDS DOWN!!!!!
Lots of people go to Ocho and Mo Bay, but Negril is where you're gonna find people that have been going for 20-30 years. There IS a reason for that. Stay at a small resort (just got back from Charela's) and 80% of the hotel workers will be calling you by your name on the first day. You're part of the family when you visit there, not just another tourist. Don't go all-inclusive, dont lock yourself away on a resort. Negril has 7 miles (with access to 5) of white sandy beach with shops, hotels, resturants, and bars for you to enjoy.

The one thing that every visitor HAS to do in Jamaica is Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios. It is spectacular. But there is lots to do there. You can visit Bob Marley's former home and even meet his mother, visit a coffee plantation. You can do action adventure kinds of things by looking up Chukka Cove on the net.
