Germany'd been disgraced in World War I and Hitler, with his plans of expanisionism and German pride, wanted to rebuild the country as a great power. He purposely broke restrictions on the German armed forces and began expansion Eastward, something that was left unchecked by the Allied powers who felt guilty for the vast amount of blame they'd (perhaps unfairly) laid on Germany during the Treaty of Versailles after World War I ("policy of appeasement").
Long story short, Hitler invaded Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland before the rest of the world realised how dangerous he'd become. By that time he'd allied himself with Mussolini (Italy) and Stalin (Russia).
Flipside, communism in Russia was seen as a big, big, BIG, BIG threat - large enough that, uh, they thought that Hitler was "better than" Stalin at some point.
Eventually Russia allied with England, France and the United States to beat back Germany; one thing led to another and the Cold War then started off where WWII ended.
Plenty of stuff that hasn't been said here can be found anywhere else on the internets. Wikipedia is your friend, failing that, a library won't do much harm either...
