There is a film that came out in UK yesterday about William Wiberforce and the abolition of the slave trade.

The film is based on fact.
It is released this weekend as it is 200 years since William Wilberforce was instrumental in abolishing the slave trade, although the act was not passed until 1833..

It's a true story, and the name is correct, being the gentleman who saw to the abolition of slavery in England. His inspiration was the American John Newton, who wrote the song "Amazing grace, " which refers to Gods grace in saving him from a life of sin.

haven't seen it yet or read the history, but there's been lots of stuff on it on the BBC news website.

It seems that Wilberforce was the tip of a very large iceberg. On the white side, the abolitionist movement began with the Quakers and was largely down to them. They recruited Wilberforce as the acceptable face of abolitionism (nobody trusted Quakers - they were the weirdos of their day). As a parliamentarian, he had a platform that they wouldn't have otherwise had. But he wasn't the steering wheel or the engine room of the movement by any means

Apparently there was a huge amount going on among blacks as well, but I haven't heard anything about who the activists were or what they did.
