It's not a "dot" before the extension "com", it's a period.

One thing we could do is not mention the period at all, because it's understood that it is there.

If you are using one of those sites which "doesn't have the same style of extension", usually you would know it(I never have used one) and then you simply wouldn't worry about it. I mean to me, it's just gobbledygook.

it is not. there are certain sites which actually do not have the same style of extension and thus cannot use it in the same fashion. localhost and file://c:/ ?? where's the dot there? don't be a moron. it's not assumed and is necessary. the reason why it is a "dot" vs period is sheer lazyness. it is shorter to write, say and spell dot vs period. after all, we have to say when spelling things out h t t p colon forward slash forward slash w w w dot yahoo dot com imagine if they used asterisks instead of periods to signify breaks.... then where would you be?

Period Com takes an eternity to say!Period. And this is science where point or dot is more appropriate than period!

Period has 3 syllables whilst dot only has 1.
In everyday speak, that with less syllables, whilst still being understandable usually wins out among the general public.

It is a [DOT] or was. Machine language uses machine code. The Alt Code that made the communications contact to the uniform resource locater was a DOT.communicate. Still is. now it is simpler.
Nobody owns the internet, that was the beauty of the thing, beauty fades.

it's easier to say something like 'yahoo dot com' rather than 'yahoo period com'... dot and com just flow together rather nicely.
