I read it approximately twelve years ago when I was in elementary school. It might have been a kids' or young adult book, but maybe not. It was set hundreds or thousands of years in the future and was about the inhabitants of Earth discovering the ruins of an ancient civilization, which happened to be our twentieth century world. It was illustrated and a lot of the scenes were the characters discovering objects we see everyday (like CD players or soda cans or lightbulbs) and trying to figure out what they were used for. Just wondering if anyone else remembered such a book, and if so, if they knew its name and/or author. Any help is much appreciated!

Try posting this question with the Librarian at the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov. As they are the largest library in the world and the greatest research tool anyone could possibly ask for, I feel sure they can not only give you the title, author's name, but a brief synopsis of the book also.

It isn't a book by Jules Verne, as cd players didn't exist then!

I've not read anything like that, however.
