I'm not that great of a breaststroker myself but I do have a few tricks towards going faster in the stroke.

First of all you should really be pulling yourself out of the water hard. I have a lot of upper-body strength and my pull is really what saves me in breaststroke. Try pulling yourself out with a lot of energy and see how that goes.

The second thing I have is don't bend your legs way out to the side. In the end your legs should only make about a 30 degree angle when looking at the swimmer from a bird's eye view. The legs should also make no more than a 70 degree angle when looking at a swimmer from the side. If you keep your kicks compact while still retaining your kicking power your resistance in the water will go down and you'll end up swimming faster.

Lastly, keep yourself really low when spinning on the wall for your turns. Your hands really shouldn't come out of the water on your turn, only your head should. Also get in as streamline of a position for your pushoff as you possibly can. The streamline method was designed for an obvious reason so use it to your advantage.

first of all, make sure your stroke is correct. have a coach or a competitive swimmer help you out on this one. it sounds much simpler than it really is.

then, strengthen your arms by doing paddle drills with a pull bouy between your legs. make sure your hands are still at the water's surface when you throw them back out in front of you for the next stroke.

build strength in your legs too by doing kickboard drills. lots and lots of it.

then coordinate your strokes and kicks in such a way that you maximize your glide over the shortest period of time. gliding is essential in breaststroke, and you'll need a lot of timing and strength to do it correctly. good luck!

Best advice is make your pullout as long as possible wihtout breaking the rules, keep your head down but not touching your chin, dont pull the water further then about chest level and then streamline as long as possible. Also make sure your turns are two hand touch and keep your chest hollow when you come up for air and keep your head down as the person should not be able to see ur eyes.

These are just a couple that have helped me take off about five seconds... Squeeze your shoulder blades together when you bring your hands in and keep your arms and shoulders as tight as you can for the whole stroke. Make sure you glide for about 1 one thousand. It made me alot faster!

my coach told me when you bring your hands together your grabbing the butter then when you bring them apart you spreading it on the bread. and also frog kick a tad bit slower then when you move you arms you glide further and faster. oh and let all your breath out when your under water and take a breath when your above water so you wont get tired its just like your breathing.

Your best bet is search the net for videos. You can have people tell you all kinds of things, but you'll really learn better by watching and then doing.

1. a low turn - only the top 1/2 of your head should be coming out of the water (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QIHPDEmt7k&mode=related&search=)
2. the kick should propell you forwards and as you start your kick your arms should shoot forward and your body go under - but in a kind of wavelike motion (its confusing)
turns are crucial though. go in fast and come out faster

on the kick:
try to bring your legs together as fast as you possibly can, almost try to break them, except that will never happen cuz of the water
