Practice practice practice! I know it's cliche but it's the truth. The more time you spendn in the water the more your performance and endurance will improve. If you're thinking open-water (which I assume, since distance indoors sucks!) then you will want to research open-water in your area and find a group or partner to swim with or someone to spot you in a boat or from shore as you swim. Distance swimming is great and you have to build up.

Set a goal for yourself, say you want to do a 2-mile open water in the bay in September in 32:00 or less. Start now by timing your mile and buildingn on it. Mix drills and warmups and some sprints in to maintain technique. Practice spotting your swim (using non-moving objects) to visually orient yourself while swimming. The more you prctice the better you will get!

Make sure you fuel up properly, plenty of protein, carbs and some sugars to keep you going and avoid post-workout fatigue. Drink plenty of water and some Gatorade afterward to repleace lost nutrients. Mainly keep yourself comfortable and in the words of Dory, "Just keep swimming!"

Good Luck!!!

swim hard, swim smart. do tons of paddle drills. maximize your glide when kicking off the wall from a tumble turn. also, train by counting the strokes you need to make a lap. then, try to bring that number down as low as you can. glide, glide, glide!
