It did for thousands of years. However, as our friend (george) pointed out, we have to have some way to trade or barter for the things we need. Very few people can survive outside of a tribal society without having a tool to equate labor for goods. For convenience we call this money. Although it is not the paper and coins per se, but rather what they represent in terms of time and effort.

We could trade goods, but it's so much easier to pass little slips of paper around instead of cows.

I think I see what you’re getting at. Could a society exist if people worked and didn’t get a pay check, then when they needed something they would just go to the store and pick it up without paying. If you needed your car fixed, you would take it in, and it would get fixed because the people there wanted to work and do a good job without the need for compensation.

I would love to live in that world, but I don’t think it’s easily achievable.

Yes, humanity did survive before it invented money and it can do it again if it learns to be self sufficient.

humans survived thousands of years without money, just trade and barter, but as societies become more complex and intertwined, money as a tool to smooth economic transfers is more and more important. so society as you know it would not be the same without money, but humanity will survive.

Sure... if we can all come to an agreement about how many pounds of potatoes can fairly pay for a computer. Or you could take it out in chickens.
