My 2 cents as a gringo living very close to Mexico City in Toluca for 4 years now. Be careful, but as you would in any large city. The metro is NOT dangerous as another poster stated. Been on it at least 100 times, never an incident never seen an incident. No jewelry! Just don't wear it unless it's not only cheap, but looks cheap, such as a watch that is obviously worth only 10 bucks. Get the hotel to call you a cab if you need one, they use trusted companies. I've never had safety issues in cabs but have heard stories. Most drivers are fine. Just as in the states, a few ruin the reputation for all.
Ok.....now places to see. My list.....
1. Templo Mayor (the pyramid in the zocalo)
2. Frida Kahlo's house/studio in the south of DF (distrito federal, same as saying Mexico City)
3. The cathedral in the zocalo
4. Teotihuacan (pre Aztec pyramids in the north of DF)
5. The historical district around the zocalo
6. Angel de Independencia on Reforma Ave. (Mexico's most important monument....you can go inside!)
7. La Zona Rosa is kinda fun for an afternoon meal or dancing/music at night.
8. yes....the turibus is great!
9. how about getting out of Mexico City for a day and going to Puebla in the south of the city by greyhound type bus. Beautiful city! On the way you will pass two volcanos one of which is still active and often smokes (Popo).
I know a great hotel in an old beautiful artsy neighborhood which will cost you half the price of the big ones and give you great service. It's called the Hotel Milan, in Colonia Roma.
(400 to 600 pesos per night)
I have more ideas as I've traveled all over DF on my days off.
Contact me if you like.........I'm Rob

you can have fun in mexico city as long as you stay safe...and take safety seriously, it's not just "hype." NEVER take the subway, or hail a cab off the street. always call for a private cab (have your hotel do this for you.) do not wear obvious brand name clothing or carry an expensive bag. do not wear outlandish jewelry...just be MODEST. wear sunglasses....i do this and found that people don't find out i'm a gringa as fast. hehe. i say that because kidnapping is a legitimate concern in mexico city. no it doesn't happen all the time, but the worry is there.
the central square is very cool...but not very safe. and the pyramids of course are great. the city is so very large that it's impossible to even see a section of it in a week. ask your hotel for recommendations. mexico city is NOT the place to get a cheap hotel...a more expensive one will save you money in the long run because of the help they can provide you.
remember though....what is 10 or 20km away in mexico city can take 1 or 2 hours to get too. if you are going far, try to agree on a flat fare with your cab driver before you start. my boyfriend is from mexico city and last week he went out for an errand (about 3km away,) and came back 10 hours later because there was a traffic jam.

Mexico is rich in history, culture, and art.
The Anthropology Museum has many galleries of exhibits and one of the best MesoAmerican collection of artifacts.
The Museo de Rufino Tamayo includes Tamayo's works, those of his contemporaries, and the latest developments in modern art. Recent exhibits include paintings of the LA artist Ed Ruscha and digital music.
The Frida Kahlo Museum features her colorful home and her artwork.
The Diego Rivera Museum features many of his works. His works can also be found in churches throughout Mexico City.
The Museo de Bellas Artes features artwork from different places and time periods.
The Museum of Modern Art features modern works of art (mostly Mexican) in a modern building. Leave some time for a tour of the grounds, which are replete with modern sculptures.
Turibus
A good way to orient yourself to principal attractions in Mexico City is to take a ride on the Turibus. Turibus is a London-style double-decker bus that stops at 24 different historical sights and attractions during a 2:45 hr. journey during which passengers can get on/off at any stop and catch a later bus which passes the same way approx. every 30-minutes. Your fare is good for all-day. This is a safe and secure way to see the highlights, principally in the center of the city - afterwhich you might want to re-visit attractions that most interest you. Oh God, I´m mexican, living in Guadalajara Mexico and I think Mexico City is a scary and dangerous place, I can´t think of going as a tourist there, please be carefull!!!.
Ok I´m exagerating, just be carefull and have fun!!!!
P.S: Go to the pyramids but don´t take a cab there, it´s a bit far and it would be to expensive, there are special tours from the city to the small town where the pyramids are. Ask in your hotel.

Get a cab driver from the hotel your are staying at. Not one of the green VW cabs (they can be dangerous). A good cab driver can get you anything you are looking for. The aztec pyromids are a good way to kill a day. I made the mistake of going to the zoo once via subway. Bad idea.

Girls like sincerity, not pageantry. Don't make a big production out of it. Don't have the whole world look at you. Don't put it on the jumbotron.
