I have been having trouble sleeping for weeks now, (don't know why) and was prescribed a month supply of sleeping pills from my GP, and obviously do not want to have to rely on them for a good nights sleep.

Good man Matt, DON'T take them. Few doctors appreciate the extent of their potential for addiction. A study carried out a few years back gave normal individuals a sleeping pill (It is doesn't matter which one) for 3 consecutive nights, then not on the fourth. The patients showed sleep disturbance and significant insomnia. This demonstrated that habituation could be created in only 3 DAYS!

What it also shows is that they actually make the sleep problem worse if you take them. A more recent study looked at patients who where taking sleeping pills chronically. This showed that the patients only slept for an average 30 minutes more than they did before medication was started, but they now took pill(s) every night.

Try a warm drink, NO reading or TV for at least 30 minutes before trying to sleep,(they keep the mind active!). Try either lavender oil on the pillow, or in a warm bath before retiring, or both.

I usualy suffer from Insomnia if I am stressed out.
What usualy helps me is trying to get up earlier in the morning and going to the gym in the evening and have a good long work out.
A glass or two of red wine will help as it contains something that helps the bodies melatonin levels which control your sleep and wake cycles. Although I do find if I have two much it agravates the Insomnia. I hope that this helps, give it a try.

Insomnia is not a disease but a symptom of some underlying problem like stress, anxiety, bad eating habits like eating just before going to bed.

Best cure for insomnia is to relax. If you learn to relax just at the right time you will fell asleep, it is as simple as that.

As far as prescribtion drugs are considered i won't recommend because of their side effects. You can try a harmless but effective herbal remedy.

Have a glass of warm milk, then do deep breathing exercises.

1) lie down on your back with your eyes closed and relax your face and your body.

2)begin by observing the natural inhalation and exhalation of your breath, if unwanted thoughts enter your mind just push them away.

3) Inhale deeply through your nostrils inflating your abdomen first like inflating a balloon.

4) On each exhale, push the air out of your body while pushing your navel towards your spine, do this for about 5 times.

5) On the next inhale fill the abdomen till full, then inhale a little more air into your ribcage and let that cause your ribcage to slightly widen apart.

6) On the next exhale let the air out of the ribcage, letting the ribs close together, then let the air out of the abdomen at the same time push your navel towards the spine.

7) Do this for about 15 -16 breaths concentrating on your breathing all the time, if it helps place your hand on your abdomen (belly).

You will feel calmer and more relaxed.

This has worked for me for about 15 years.
It is now working for my 12 year old as well (puberty, anxiety etc.,)

I would also recommend Yoga classes.

I have the same problem. Periodically, no sleep.

Some herbal pills can help to tire you enough to drop off.

Or a good stiff drink(s).

Sometimes, lying in bed with a not-so-great book, can help. Your brain eventually shuts down due to boredom.

Are you worrying or stressing over something? Maybe finding the cause of the insomnia might resolve things.

Good luck.

I heard of these two 'cures' a couple of years ago. one is sniffing your socks and the other is to put your pillow at the foot of the bed and sleep in that direction. Hope you find a cure. It sucks when you can't sleep

Avoid stimulants. Don't exercise before bed. I talked to a Dr about this once and he told me to count my breaths. Breath deeply and slowly and count each one, If you lose you place because your mind wondered off then you have to start over. I have never made it past 300. It works for me when I can't sleep.

try breathing exercises, and more water during the day, also relaxing your thoughts by journaling before bed or reading a little- don't watch tv right before bed and don't listen to music with a high bass content-those things raise your stamina and can hinder sleeping ability!
