"Suppose you have two numbers. The difference of the two numbers is 12. The product of the two numbers is 17. Multiply the larger of the two numbers by 100, add 50 times the smaller number to that, round the total to the nearest whole number. What is you answer?"

You have two equations and two unknowns, x and y, so they are solvable.

(1) x-y = 12
(2) x*y = 17

from (1), x = 12+y

substitute above into (2)
(12+y)*y=17
y^2+12*y = 17

we have a second order polynomial so there are two answers (using the quadratic equation):
y=-sqrt(53)-6 = -13.2801 or y=sqrt(53)-6 = 1.28011

plug y back into x = 12+y,
x=-sqrt(53)+6 = -1.28011 or x=sqrt(53)+6 = 13.2801

x is the larger number in this case because it is larger than y in both cases

x*100 = -128.011 or 1328.01
y*50 = -664.005 or 64.0055

x*100 + y*50 = -792.016 or 1392.02

So your answers are -792 and 1392

I encourage you to follow what I did using a calculator since it is difficult to calcuate the square root of 53 using just pencil and paper.

Let the larger no. be x.
Therefore, the other no. is x-12
x * x-12=17
x * 100+ 50(x-12)= answer a.
Round answer a to the nearest whole no.

I answered a question similar to this one.
I dont think you got the problem right because there is no mulitpive number or porduct that equals 17.

let te smaller number be x.
let the bigger number be x+12.

(x+12)-x=12

x(x+12)=17
x^2+12x=17

(x+12)100+50(x)=0
100x+1200+50x=0
150x+1200=0
150x=-1200
x=-8 (the smaller number)
x+12
=-8+12
=4 (the bigger number)

I'd say 1450. But then again, math isn't my strongpoint so who knows.

x+y=17
x-y=12
100x+50y=?

x=12+y
12+y+y=17
17-12=5
2y=5
y=2.5
x+2.5=17
y=2.5 x=14.5

14.5(100)+2.5(50)=1575
