So, suppose I have a 100cm long tank. I've heard that the cross brace effectively makes the 100cm tank as strong as a 50cm long tank, using the same glass thickness .

The cross brace helps prevent the glass from pushing outwards.Generally this is done in the middle to combine the strength of the front and back glass. This keeps the glass from bending in the middle and breaking.Generally it is better to spend the extra money and buy a tank with a glass rated for the size.

That sounds about right. A brace attached to diagonal corners in this way will triangulate the structure and increase it's resistance to bend out of shape and possibly break the glass. You'll need two cross braces in an X formation to fully triangulate the top of the tank.
