My bf's computer won't boot up. It was fine when he turned it off the last time he used it.

There are lights on the tower which means there must be power going through it, but nothing happens when he pushes the 'on button'. Also the keyboard doesn't light up.

He has checked the cords and they are tight. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You didn't mention if the lights on you monitor were on or off. Try pressing it. If that didn't work, try this simple step:
Turn Off computer> Unplug all the cables connected to your computer tower or CPU (I mean ALL OF THEM)> Press the power button for about 60 seconds. Do nothing, just press it.
After that, put all the cables back on and turn on your computer.

Make sure the Ram modules and processor are seated good in their slots.

It also may be an indication the power supply has lost one of it's voltages. Most likly a 5 or -5v.

If you hear absolutely nothing except fans, the processor is not able to run for some reason.

No output to monitor or keyboard suggests a motherboard failure. Particularly if your system is using integrated video. Meaning no dedicated video card.

sounds like the alternator. have you checked the connections on the battery cables? also turn the radio and headlights off before you try to start it.
