With a small engine probably fairly frequently, say every 5000mi or less. You could try cleaning it in petrol to get a bit more life out of it.

Do not use petrol to clean any foam filter it will cause the glue and sometimes the foam itself to disintegrate after a period of time! Use kerosene or water soluble degreaser followed by warm soapy water then a good rinse. Allow to dry then apply a foam filter oil by placing the filter in a plastic bag with the oil and massaging until filter is evenly moist with oil. If this procedure is not followed or foam filter oil is not used dust particles will enter your air intake. With paper filters compressed air can be succesful sometimes but usually you are better off replacing the unit. If you are riding in dusty conditions the filter will need to be cleaned/replaced more regularly. Check the condition and do what's necessary. :)

5000mls would be about right. Remember if its a foam filter you can clean it in petrol allow dry and use a small amount light oil sprayed on to it (WD40). Paper filter you can clean it with compressed air or a hoover but the best is just put a new one in.

Look at it once a month. That will take about 5 minutes.
If it starts to change color because of the dirt, clean it.

cleaning an air filter isn't really worth it, if you're going through the trouble to remove it to clean, you might as well replace it
