After typing "convert F: /fs:ntfs to format, I rec'd a "enter current volumne label for drive F:" Since I didn't know what that was all about, I did not type anything. Or do I just name the harddrive?

Label just refers to any name you want to give the drive for easier distinct recognition of the device by users.

Type in whatever you like or nothing at all.
