I saw a question asked about whether poverty could ever be eradicated, and it really got me thinking. Could poverty ever be eradicted or would the west just change and improve their standard of living so that anything that was below a certain standard would be consider poor.

Yes I have noticed that phone calls and flights to some of the poorer countries are the most expensive. E.g (Don't quote me on this, Im just using approximate figures) it cost less to fly to New York (£250+) than it does to fly to Accra in Ghana (£400+), even though America is farther away. Why is this can anyone tell me?

Most of the wealth in the west is gotten off of people giving charitably to causes that save the poor countries. Why would the west want to eradicate poverty when it is their bread and butter? As long as they are poor, the west can exploit them (cheap labor), and as long as they are poor, the westerners can exploit those who feel sorry for them and want to help them (fake charities).

It's kind of like the thing with some televangelists out there. As long as there are 'lost' people out there, there is someone to pay the tithes that fund trips on private jets to the Bahamas for lunch. That's why they preach heaven/salvation by day, and pick up hookers on the streets by night. You have to keep some lost souls out there to fund your 'mission'.

There will always be differences in wealth distribution even in our own cities, communities and down to our own street. Maybe even in our own families. The question is, who is richer, the person with material wealth or the one who is happy?

The cause of price variations is due to supply and demand. There are many more people travelling to New York than to Ghana so more airlines supply more seating to the more popular destinations. This helps keep the prices down.

It may be my imagination, but are some of the most expensive countries to telephone in the world also the most poor? Please check out the "calling out" charges of the skype network.

Perhaps some governments in very poor countries see charges that they can set for incoming phone calls as an important part of revenue.

Cheap telecommunications services between ordinary citizens in different countries can encourage trade and economic growth for those ordinary citizens.

Do the government policies of some of those "third world countries" cause poverty for example. Are governments in poor countries sometimes more likely to spend money on weapons and soldiers rather than elementary education for children?

In fact the gap has widened.
Poverty can never be eradicated and the west will make sure it doesnt.
The west has always had a better standard of living, simply because of better infrastructure. The west has money to maintain it.
Simply the poor countries cannot compete with the west.

Having lived in Angola and Nigeria for 5 years I feel it will never be eradicated. The people do not strive to better themselves, they do not have the education to understand that there is better out there. To them that is their way of living and that is that. Obviously there is the minority who will get themselves out that situation.
