Does anyone know where the author of ' clan of the cave bear' actually GOT the name 'Ayla' from? Because I had never heard of it before the book, and i dont think anyone else had either.

Yes, the sequence is all approximately Ayla. There are new characters like Thonolan and Jondalar. They are brothers and journey on a travel. Ayla's and Jondalars tale hyperlink up and move from there.

It's been a long time since I read any of her books, but I seem to remember "Ayla" being an approximation of something the Clan couldn't pronounce. So the next question is, what was the name they couldn't pronounce?

I don't think she "got" it from anywhere. Most authors make up names based on their imagination and what sounds good to them.
