The galactic disk, which bulges outward at the galactic center, has an estimated diameter of about 100,000 light-years. The distance from the Sun to the galactic center is now estimated at 26,000 ± 1400 light-years while older estimates could put our parent star as far as 35,000 light-years from the central bulge.

You will get a wide variety of answers on here. That does not mean that everybody is full of crap. They just read different books. They measure how many stars are in the Galaxy by counting the stars visible in one cubic arc second of space in different areas of the milky way then extrapolating that amount. The actually density of stars through out the milky way is very hard to calculate. Also there are dead stars out there now, neutron stars, and binary stars. All of these can throw off how many are visible. So it is possible for it to be as little as one hundred million (100,000,000) all the way up to three hundred million (300,000,000). It is constantly being debated. Even scientist in the same journal will publish different numbers.

If it was possible to travel at the speed of light it would take you approximately 80,000 light years to go from where our solar system sits to the closest edge of our galaxy (the milky way). The Milky Way is 250,000 to 300,000 Light years in circumference and 1000 Light Years in thickness. It is estimated to contain between 200 billion and 400 billion stars. The Milky Way contains approximately 200 billion stars. Our galaxy is at least 100,000 light-years in diameter, and our sun lies about 25,000 light years from the center. :)

That's a lot of stars. :0
