BELGRADE! Make sure you add it to your map! It's a great city, much larger than Zagreb, for example. The weather is great in May, lots of sun, but not too hot :) People are more than friendly, there are many things to see, streets are usually crowded :) And NIGHT LIFE is far better than in any of the other cities you mentioned. There are lots of night clubs, disco clubs, cafes that are open all night long and people are just having a blast! And just try their food, you'll probably wish to take some of their chefs back home with you! :) But if you wanna go to a city from your list, pick Bucharest. It's a very pretty town, though I'm not sure about their night life... When I was there it seemed kind of deserted, you know not so many people on the streets, everything was very still. But I was there for a weekend in July, so all the people were probably on their vacations outside the city.

I never saw Sofia and Zagreb, so I can't say anything about those cities, but I am from Bucharest and I think you should visit Bucharest. Bucharest has a lot of places that you can visit, museums, parks, the people are very nice and friendly, and the night life is the best:))
Don't think Bucharest is like in the Borat movie, like some people assume...Borat movie was made in a village in the countryside of Romania, and that is not the image that you should have of Romania.
Have a nice trip!!!

Although Bucharest is getting better it's still not a real tourist destination...yet (but don't worry it's nothing like the Borat movie...in fact it wasn't even shot there). Sofia and Zagreb are a little more interesting in my opinion - Sofia reminds me a little of Calgary and Denver as you can see the mountains in the background. But honestly, if you're going to be in that part of Eastern Europe then I would recommend either Budapest in Hungary (which is absolutely gorgeous, especially at night) or Krakow in Poland. For the other cities, I would wait a little bit...Romania and Bulgaria just got into the European Union and Croatia has yet to be admitted.

Hi,
I would suggest Sofia, it is my city and it is very nice during the May, becuase all the trees are green and springs is at its end and summer is comming.
I am not sure what entertainment you like - cuisine, shopping, sightseeing, clubs ... You can find all of these in Sofia. Night life is rich in variety - there is music clubs for every taste.
Prices are at a half from prices for example in Spain and more travels find that Sofia is big fun at very affordable price.
If you wan to check bulgarian cuisine before comming to Sofia, see my personal page about my favorite restaurants in Sofia http://www.sofiabulgariatravel.com/sofia-restaurants.html - you can see pictures and movies, don't laught too much I made them with my camera :))))
If you like shopping, here are my favorite shops (still not many of them are added online, but I add new when I have time) http://www.sofiabulgariatravel.com/sofia-shopping.html
If you have some concrete questions about Sofia I will be happy to help :)
Good luck,
Rumi

Budapest is often identified since the "Little Paris of Middle Europe" and if you want to see that city you'll need to have a look with hotelbye . Budapest is popular not merely for the monuments sending a unique 1,000-year-old culture, but also for the relics of others who resolved here. Remains from equally Roman occupation and significantly later ruled by the Turks can however be seen in the city. Budapest has two sides, Buda and Pest, stretching over the banks of the Danube, and they're representing two different people of the city. Suburban Buda and its ancient castle area present old streets and houses, museums, caves and Roman ruins. The active Pest side provides the largest parliament building in Europe, riverside promenades, flea areas, bookstores, classic shops and café houses.
