I've got a hard drive that's about to go or says my operating system. I've already backed my essential data onto another hard disk. But just for emotional reasons( don't ask what) i want to save this hard drive. I've tried running scan disk in windows and dos but it just hangs( In dos there is no auto fix so I have to sit there pressing yes to every "fix problem" and get atleast 30 problems every cluster), I've tried running norton disk doc but it also freezes after 7%. Help me

Is there a program that can do it fast and easy and automatically and is also free to download :-)

My OS is XP on the bad disk. I formated and even changed the filesystem from fat 32 to NTFS to fat 32 again in hopes something will happen. I even tried fixing it from my other OS UBUNTU using fsck, and even tried installing UBUNTU on the bad hard drive. Finally I patritioned it into a10G area and a 30G area.I couldn't even install XP initially till I did that. The bad sectors are in the 30 G partition but the whole hard disk is acting crazy ( very slow and hangs for no reason)

There's no way to remove bad sectors/clusters in hard disks, but there are tools that marks them so that they wont be used. (e.g. scandisk)

Having bad sectors/cluster on your disk is a sign that you should already be getting a new one.

let it go.. there's no saving a dying disk. it is beyond help. put the disk out of it's misery. take it out of the Pc and smash it with a hammer on the side walk (wearing protective glasses) either you have at least 1 of the heads on the platter gone or the controller is not picking out the data anymore correctly. you cannot fix it. It will die a horrible death even if put on a Resuscitator.

disk Dr is nice, bad clusters may or may not be the issue * rem your using windows right? If I knew which o/s you use it would be easier to answer your question! hint hint... recovery of bad clusters is not always possible though most times in home use its just sloppy pggming and or o/s error. NORTON has CAUSED many a problem with hdd errors, it even sometimes calls itself a virus as does maccafee aka MC daffy~ I do my best to umm DUCK these quacks...There are methods for free to fix things but bef you contact me on the matter? have these things avail the name and version of your O/S and the CD ready for use, as well as knowing how to get to administrator mode and safe mode as well. Otherwise g-luck with it~

You cannot remove bad sector from hard drive if it phisically damaged, you can only hide it. If the bad sector is not phisical, then you can remove it.
Try to low format your hard drive first (this wipe out ur data and cannot be recovery) So beware of it
You can use
HDD Regenerator 1.51
HDAT2 4.5.2
If you have difficulties, just buy Hiren's BootCD. Its the ultimate way to do what you want.

It's a piece of hardware.
Get over it and just replace it.
Sounds as though it is physically self destructing.
No software will help that.
Hang it on the wall if you have sentimental ties.
