My own opinion is that most of the "political correctness" we see today in commercials and TV shows started roughly back in the 1970's. It wasn't in full blown mode yet, but just starting up. If you ever have an opportunity to watch old TV shows and their commercials from the 1950's and 1960's you'll see what I mean. A lot of that stuff just wouldn't fly on today's TV, not because it isn't any good, but because there weren't as many unwritten rules back then - TV was more like the Wild West back then. You ask about surviving taboos - I contend that there are actually more taboos in today's television, and that today's television is actually more bland and restrictive than in yesteryear. There are more channels to watch than ever before, but actually less good programming.
