If the microphone is installed on your computer already you probably just need to unmute it (it will be muted by default). Go to Start-All Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-Volume Control.
If the "microphone" slide does not show up then it is just disabled in the menu so click on Options-properties then find and enable it.

Click the edit tab in the recorder window and click audio properties. Select your Mic in the record device. By the way, the mute button should be left muted in the mixer! The only reason it defaults to mute is to keep it off when normally using your PC to keep feedback in the speakers from happening. Any device that uses the microphone automatically unmutes it when in use!

Right click on your volume control, go to sound setup. Or wander through your control panel.
Make sure microphone is checked.
(default is usually to have microphone muted--you may want to uncheck that!

double click on that little speaker down in the system tray to open ip the sound control console----be sure all the boxes are not muted and the sound level is up-----------in XP-the microphone is plug and play
