Sometimes you may not know, however here are the most obvious signs: If your home page all of a sudden changes; If you notice strange icons in your taskbar that werent there before; If your modem keeps trying to dial out, even if you arent using dial-up internet; if your start-up is excessively slow all of a sudden, or there is/are extra program(s) running that werent there before. If certain things just flat out dont work anymore, or are missing completely; If you keep getting pop-ups from unknown "Virus scan' programs that keep telling you your pc is infected and has like 211 viruses on it.( Never click on those btw, those are malware disguised as virus programs.); If your system restore is disabled or turned off all of a sudden, or you cannot boot into safe mode....these are some of the more immediately noticeable signs, but just remember if your pc is just acting weird, and you feel that somethings just not right, then it's safe to assume its a virus and take all the procautions. remember to update your virus program often. Also its a good idea to have an anti-spyware in addition to the virus scan, and keep them both up to date. When I suspect i have a virus or malware, I always boot into safe mode and run both those programs. ( just make sure you update them before you boot into safe mode, cause the update is from the web, and doesnt work in safe mode.) After the scan, regardless of the results, i re-boot normally and run them both one more time. Its a pain in the a--, but its worth it!! good luck, I hope this helped.

Depends on the virus
Computer slows down.
Hard drive always running.
Unexplained messages or pop-ups.
Web pages you didn't want pop up.
Programs stop working.
Start getting Windows errors
Windows will not boot.

If you're not sure..go to Symantec.com, McAfee.com or Trendmicro.com and try a free scan.

Strange stuff starts to happen. Maybe reloads every minute or other stuff. It just best not to get them. Use a good av and anti spy package. Have a search on wikipedia.org or google.com to search for consequences of viruses. Some of the really bad ones, and these are rare, can cause your to to work again.
