I am worried that someone will just rip the unit out of the window and break into the house. How do I avoid this? I have found posts that say mount the unit to a wall or attach a horizontal bar on the inside that is longer than the width of the window but the posts did not elaborate on how this is done.

For a wooden double hung window: Slide your AC into place,
level with a support bracket. Bring down window. There should
be 4 small screws to attach top of AC to wood frame. Plus, for
security take a 4 inch nail and hammer on a slant at top of window INTO where it meets the window frame on the inside.
One nail worked 18 yrs for me. Do two for you, if doubtful.
Make sure condensation water will drain OUT. ( Coils freeze).
Get tube length of foam to seal space between windows.

For a glass slider window: Make a wood frame for open area,
paint board & frame white. Drill in long black 4" screws thru
pre-drilled holes on window frame top & side. Secure small screws (4) across inside top of AC & bottom of wood frame.
Install sheet metal screws, one above and below on slider thru
rigid frame to prevent movement.

If no support bracket, spare 2"x4" blocks & plywood give you
the heighth you need to do either. I have seen maintenance men do it and know what happens if AC tilts inside.

Whether it is there contact the wellbeing division and see what the code says. Ninety levels could also be viewed a secure temperature where you reside. If it is, the AC unit has to go. If it isn't viewed a reliable temperature, then you definately again have a leg to face on. File a criticism with the wellness department. While you are at it, contact the simpler trade Bureau. Once more, all of it depends upon your rights as a renter the place you reside and what the wellbeing division considers dependable.

the best way to solve this problem is to fasten the bottom of the case the air conditioner is in to the window sill if possible....pull a/c unit out of case take case and prefit to window...drill four 3/16 inch holes in bottom front of the case so it aligns with the center of the window sill take four 4 inch wood screws and screw them into window sill through the holes you drilled in case..slide a/c unit back into case and put rest of the a/c back together ....just reverse the steps to remove during the winter and put silcon in the holes you drilled in the window sill...some window units come with mounting kits that will mount your a/c to the outside wall of the window and this is very hard to remove with a/c in the case....
