Really. Its easy. Because they are checking you understand the question, of course. Many english peole do this too and many Americans do not. Anyway they are friends so it does not matter. Right?

Because there are significant differences between our UK English and American English. That's why in both cases we sometimes use different words for the same things- pavement/sidewalk springs to mind. There are some differences in the way things are phrased as well, so putting 'right?' at the end of a question is not necessarily wrong, it's a just a more casual way of phrasing a question.
There, I done it! I answered your question without using the phrase- back water, stump jumping, jibber speak..

It's a way of emphasizing the question. Just like australians say "yeah?" after most of their questions.

The kind of questions which are posted with the 'right?' at the end are usually saying "I only want to hear from folks who totally agree with me and want to add their Heck Yeahs or their You Go Girls to make me feel good about my (old-fashioned) views"
