Warmth - color, texture, lighting, and originality - that is what I go for in a cafe. The best example I can give is (ironically) a chain - Le Pain Quotidien (New York, Brussels etc). All branches are always packed. The recipe for their success is warmth. Earthy wood tables, the smell and sights of baking, homey decorations (old-fashioned candelabras) on the table. In a world dominated by modern minimimalist restaurant decor, the cozy cafe offers a very appealing alternative for customers.

It's important to have good food at a cafe, but the most important thing to me is the service. I won't go back some where if the service is bad. I can't stand that!

The books.
When I went to the Phoenix Cafe in San Jose ages ago, they had a book store and a nice place to study upstairs. Everything smelled like coffee and they had the best italian sodas and green gelatos there.
