YOU DON'T GET HDTV FROM CABLE UNLESS YOU PAY FOR IT. FORTUNATALLY YOUR TV HAS A SLOT FOR A CABLE CARD WHICH WILL UNSCRAMBLE ALL PREMIUM CHANNELS YOU PAY FOR, SO YOU CAN GET RID OF THAT UGLY SET TOP BOX. THE MONEY YOU'LL SAVE ($9 FOR BOX, $1.75 FOR CARD) WILL PAY FOR THE HD CHANNELS. THE ONLY SHORT COMING OF THE FIRST GENERATION CARD IS THAT YOU CAN'T GET "ON DEMAND" OR THE CABLE COMPANIES "GUIDE".

As long as your TV has a "quam" tuner built in you will be able to get most of the HD channels that the cable company offers as well as some of the digital music channels without the box with the exception of the premium channels. The first two numbers on the screen are the analog channel that the digtal signal is "riding on" and the last three are the actual digital or HD channel. The company that I work for knows about people getting these channels for free, but does not push the issue and make a big deal about it. Can't speak for the other companies.

if it has an HD tuner then you are set. most cable companies have a few channel with HD at the end of the number indicating the channel is high def. there usally is a plan with all HD channels. just check with them. don't get fooled in them telling you that you need there HD box to get these channels. mine tried to ttell me i need there box. i told them i already had one from my local store. the person tried to tell me then i got it illegally. i told the person they were crazy and hung up on them. just stick to you have one and don't be caught up into getting their box.

Call your cable company and ask them to explain their HD package to you. I have Comcast and it costs about $20 more for the digital package and HD stations. I get about 10-12 HD stations. You will get a digital/HD set top box.

But, only those few stations will come in HD, everything else will be upscaled to 480p. For example, Comedy Central is SDTV (480p), where NBC comes in HDTV (720p).
