God created the earth , it took him 7 days , on the seventh day it was completed and he named that day Sunday.

The name "Sunday" (Day of the Sun) apparently originated in pre-Christian Egyptian culture. (See T. Slater's article "Sunday" in the 1908 Catholic Encyclopedia.) In Ptolemaic Egyptian astrology, the seven planets, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon, each had an hour of the day assigned to it, and the planet which was "regent" during the first hour of any day of the week gave its name to that day.

Its becoz of the greeks belief that since sun was the source of life on earth so the first day of the week should be important and hence they named it sunday i.e the day of the sun

In a lot of places that are of Spanish descent, Monday (Lunes) is the first day of the week. Even in the Bible (I'm not a Bible-thumper) states that on the seventh day (Sunday), he rested.

sun is the prime source of energy for our earth...
there wouldn't have been any life on earth if not for the sun...
in almost all the food chains (except for the chemosynthetic bacteria) the food chain starts with the sun...
hence in most of the ancient cultures of our world, the first day of the week is named after the supreme power/ prime source of life on earth - The SUN
