Hey sweetie, been there big time, it's called trichotillomania. It is an obsessive-compulsive disorder and yes, it usually starts with traumatic events in life. Yahoo has a support group for it called trichotillomania-friends. I started in the '70s and pulled for 20 years before I overcame it. I stopped, but not before almost becoming permanently bald. I have very long hair so I can pull it up (see my avatar) and hide the bald spots. You need help for this. I did it on my own, but that is not easy to do. At least go on the Yahoo group site and learn more about it and then see a counselor. Good luck and know that it is more common than you would think and you are NOT alone at ALL.

A friend of mine had it in high school. She was bald in a ring around her head about an inch thick because she would pull the hairs out, one at a time. Even her eyebrows.
She told me it was a 'tick' and I know that she had turrets as well. I thought that it was associated with the turret's, but perhaps not. I have never heard it associated with depression, because I have been looking into a lot of depression stuff lately. Likely an existing condition that Depression worsens.
Good luck to you, sweetie. I don't think that you are insane.

I knew a girl who pulled her hair out one @ a time root and all, sucked the root bulb off the hair shaft then carefully sorted out the next victim. Poor girl even did this in her sleep. Steph had a bald spot the size of a Lg. egg on top of her head. She had a severe nervous condition brought on by her fathers brutality.

It's a type of self mutilation, according to MTV. They just did a "true life" epoisode of people who pull hair. The only way the people on the show were able to overcome it, was seeing and talking to a mental health doctor.

It's like being a cutter, causing pain to yourself. I have a friend that pulls put her hair and her eyelashes as a way to punish herself and control her stress. It's all the same.

Yes, I have a sister-in-law that has this problem. It is triggered by anxiety and stress. This can be a very big problem if left untreated. I would advise seeing a therapist on this matter.
