The plant is growning in my vegi garden it looks healthy but it is not red

witchway thanks for answer but what kind of nutrients would i use groing in sandy soil near beaches in Sydney Australia, and water restrictions prevent lots of watering

"saaanen" is right about different varieties being various colors. I'm writing from zone 3 in North Dakota with temps as low as -40 Fahrenheit, where my many varieties flourish. Tried and failed to grow it in zone 7 Virginia. So I'm impressed by your ability to grow it at all in Sydney's balmy climate. I've found my green varieties to have the best flavor and cooking characteristics, so I add a few stalks of the red variety or a few drops of food coloring to liven up the color. All rhubarb are voracious eaters so pile on the fertilizer and watch it grow, grow, grow ! RScott

to answer your additional question , if your growing it in sand then you might want to throw in some organic material like manure or compost , some fertilizer couldnt hurt either just try not to over do it with any of those as they can all harm your plant , if you put too much organic material then the leaves will turn yellowish , if that happens then just add in more coral or sand or anything thats alkaline.

I live in Sydney but have clay soils and have never grown rhubarb.

Studying horticulture,my guess is to leave it and let it keep growing for a while.

ripe rhubarb is red at the base of the stalk upwards...until then its only green

patience, love, nurturing and proper nutrients will help them grow and ripen ;)

Do you have a variety that is supposed to be red? There are varities that are green.

You have to give it time to ripen just a couple more weeks and it'll be RED
