It's not paying off for the fans in 12 different cities who have watched these pathetic university level games. The trade was bad for the Oilers, bad for the fans and bad for the NHL. I hope they lose every game so the league will not allow rental players next year.

I don't care of the Oilers lose 20 in a row. You can't say that it was a good trade or a bad trade based on recent results, because they didn't even make the trade for this year. They are thinking about next year. We will see how the younger players pan out.
Will it pay off? I think it has to be better than the alternative, which would have been to let Smyth go off as a free agent. Lowe made a decision that Ryan Smyth was not worth the 5.7 million he was demanding. Smyth made a decision that he would rather make 5.7 million in New York than make 5.4 million in Edmonton. I hope he changes his mind. Bottom line, they had given up on resigning Smyth before the trading deadline.
Hopefully, Smyth will come to his senses and try harder to sign with the Oilers in the offseason. If that happens, the Oilers will come out looking golden. If not, they need those other players to pan out.
Also keep in mind, the Oilers now have extra money now that Smyth is no longer on their payroll beyond the 2006-07 season. This will give them some room to get someone good. So I don't think this was such a bad trade for the Oilers.

Way too early to tell. If any of the prospects they got for Smyth make the Oiler roster and are productive, the trade will be seen as having made the most of a difficult situation.
If Smyth were to re-sign with Edmonton or any of the prospects were to become first rate contributors, the trade would be seen as a success.

Hmmm... lets crunch the numbers for a minute.
The Islanders look a little more like a playoff team (LITTLE!!)
The Oilers lost 12 straight! I'm pretty sure the trade didn't work out for them.
Now, about resigning him in the off-season... I never really thought about that. For his sake, I hope he doesn't and instead joins a better team. But, all credit to Edmonton (who i don't like very much), they have been injury plagued.. i guess. They lost some good players at the beginning of the season. So, with Smyth back, they'll benefit and come out looking very smart indeed.

No it will not. As you see they lost 12 straight games after their trade. It was a foolish mistake, because he was the leader of the Oilers team. They will not make it anywhere in the next couple years, because even though they do get a good draft pick, ryan smyth was more.

When Smyth re-signs with the Oilers as a free agent during the off-season, it will turn out to be the best move they've made in years. Face it, they were DEAD this year. There was no prayer of even sneaking into the 8 spot this year (and we know from last year what can happen when a team sneaks into the 8 spot), so who even cares about the short-term impact of this deal?

It hasn't yet. We'll see how good these kids they got for Smyth turn out. Could benefit them in the long run. It IS better than losing Smyth for nothing in free agency...
The deal COULD greatly benefit the team if Smyth re-signs in the offseason, which would mean they got some decent young players for nothing as they got Smyth back.

It hasnt payed off at all, it took them over a month to finally win a game, and judging by past Oilers drafting history, you could give them 20 first round picks and they still wouldnt draft anyone good!

Based on 11 straight losses, I'd say the trade hurt them. We'll have to see in the next year or two if the prospects they traded for work out. Edmonton is in a re-building stage.

They have one win since they traded him, so no it hasn't paid off and it won't. But the thinking is so twisted in that organization, they'll probably give Kevin Lowe a contract extension.
