Yep!!! I totally agree with YOU! The Amazing Race definitely kicks a$$!!! Never a dull moment and it always puts you on the edge of your seat! Especially if you are supporting a team, you will definitely feel the tension and the drama. It's as if you're on the race too, racing with them. Plus, you're right, you will see lots of places. But that's not all! You will also be given a hint and taste of the culture that prevails in that certain country/place. It's not just entertaining but it's culturally and socially informative as well!!! It will really open up your mind!

Jerry Bruckheimer and Co., YOU ARE TEAM NUMBER ONE!!!

Does.....not......compute!!

Seriously, "good reality show" is an oxymoron.

Reality shows are pure crap. They're the lowest common denominator of human intellect, which is to say that they are completely lacking in any kind of intelligence. Reality shows have taken television to an unprecedented new low, and that's really saying something, because it's not like television was really all that high up there to begin with.

Here's why I feel this way about reality shows:

1. They celebrate the absolute worst qualities of a human being. The participants are almost universally complete idiots, who spend the majority of the show quibbling with each other over the pettiest of issues. They try (feebly) to "out-smart" the other participants, but 999 times out of 1000, the best strategy they can come up with is to get one of the other participants to trust them, and then stab them in the back. Ooooh, betcha didn't see that coming, huh? Yeah right.

2. Contrived tension. What is it about two morons bickering that reality show viewers find so unendingly fascinating? I honestly don't get it. I can hardly conceive of anything more boring than that! I can just imagine the conversations in the editing room. "Okay, Bob, let's go to the scene of all the morons bickering. Good. Now cut to the one-on-one interviews where they all ***** about each other. Okay, and stop tape. Great job guys. Ship it." This is like gossip, except it's even worse. At least with gossip, all the tawdry little stories are about people you actually know. When it comes to reality shows, it's just a bunch of morons stuck in a house together. Who the hell cares?

3. Predictability. As I've already alluded to, every damn episode of every damn reality show is exactly the same. Seriously, if you've seen one half of one episode of Big Brother or Survivor, you've pretty much seen every reality show ever made, even the ones they haven't started filming yet. It's the most boring, predictable formula since the sitcom. You know how everyone makes fun of Gilligan's Island because every episode was the same? It usually goes something like "Hey, did you ever see that episode of Gilligan's Island where the Professor comes up with a way to get everybody off the island, and Gilligan f***s it up?" "Yeah. Ha ha ha. You mean like every episode?" Well, reality shows are even worse. It's all the predictability of a sitcom, minus all the jokes and other assorted entertainment value.

4. A little intellectual stimulation, please. Is there even *anything* at all redeeming about reality shows? Anything??? Do you ever learn anything? Do they ever make you think? [Hint: Thinking to yourself "Whoa, dude! I can't believe Josh stabbed Rock in the back like that" doesn't count.] "But wait!" you say...."It's just entertainment. It doesn't have to be all educational and sh*t. Stoopid nerd." Yes, it's true. There's no rule that says television has to be intellectual stimulating. Certainly, if the past is any guide (sitcoms, soap operas, professional wrestling, etc), entertainment and education are two completely different things. But at least with a sitcom, there's an occasional joke that's actually funny, and you're not just laughing because you were prodded to do so by the laugh track. At least with a soap opera, they actually have a story (horribly lame as it might be), and every episode is different than the last. When it comes to reality shows, I can't see one single redeeming quality. It's just a heaping, steaming pile of horse excrement. Besides, even if entertainment hasn't traditionally been at all educational or thought-provoking, it still *should* be, IMO.

As usual, your opinion may vary. I'm sure a lot of people will be offended by what I've said about their little pastime. Still others will think I'm taking everything way too seriously. Some will just think I'm an arrogant, wannabe-elitist snob who "thinks he's all that". However, if just one person out there agrees with me, I'll be happy to know that I'm not alone.

I personally love America's Next Top Model, or Amazing Race, even the Apprentice I'll watch. As long as the contestants are actually working towards a goal to better themselves, or are putting forth effort to reach a goal, I'll consider watching it. Now if they're stranded on an island with a bunch of other "hotties" in their bikinis and board shorts and trying not to make out with anyone, then I can't stand it.
