Start with a silk tablecloth without a hem. Make sure the first thing the end of the tablecloth will reach is a plate, that will get the tablecloth to lay flat and keep it from flipping up and grabbing the edge of a glass or silverware. Then when the tablecloth is pulled it should be pulled with two hands, one at each corner (it helps to keep the cloth flat as it comes across the table). And the pull must be made very fast, this allows the inertia of the objects on the table to keep them in place.

You don't have to be a magician to do this. All you need to do is be fast. If you study the physics of it, you will find that on object at rest wants to stay at rest. This is why the glasses will stay on the table.
The first part of trick to getting this to work is to pull the cloth fast enough to not disturb the glasses. The point is to let the glasses stay at rest. You have to practice this to get fast enough.
The second have of this trick is to pull the cloth exactly parallel to the table's surface. If you pull up or down at all, you will just throw everything off the table. You will also have to practice this.
The best way to practice is to use plastic instead of glass, and to find a spot far away from anything that could get hit. This trick was discovered by accident, and has since then has been mostly forgotten, except for magicians. In all honesty, it is all physics, not magic.

The magician pulls the tablecloth fast enough, so that the force being applied throughout the tablecloth cannot be transmitted quickly enough to the plates, and the force that he applies overcomes the kinetic friction between the plates and the cloth to such a degree that the friction force is negligible.

objects not moving want to stay that way. if you pull the tablecloth out fast enough, it will not put enough force on the plates to cause them to move.
