When you are asked to subtract a negative amount, you must add instead, so 1 - (-2) is actually 1 + 2 which equals 3.
0.88 - (-0.89) = 0.88 + 0.89
which is different from the answer you gave.
You can think of subtracting a negative like this: say you had 10 dollars and your friend took away 4, that would be like saying 10 - 4 = 6. Now if you "take away" the fact of what just happened, that would be like saying 6 - (-4), which would give you your whole 10 dollars back.

It might be an idea to look at a few examples with the NUMBER LINE in mind
Example 1
5 - 1
How many steps from 1 to 5?
Answer is 4 steps to the RIGHT thus:-
5 - 1 = 4
Example 2
3 - 5
How many steps from 5 to 3?
Answer is 2 steps to the LEFT thus:-
3 - 5 = - 2
Example 3
4 - (- 2)
How many steps from (- 2) to 4?
Answer is 6 steps to the RIGHT thus:-
4 - (-2) = 6 = 4 + 2
From above it is noted that, when subtracting, two minuses give a plus.
Therefore in your question:-
0 . 88 - ( - 0.89) = 0.88 + 0.89 = 1.77

No, it should be like this-
0.88-(-0.89)=0.88+0.89
=1.87
When you open a bracket, just remember:
- (-) = +
+ (-) = -
- (+) = -
+ (+) = +
