You should look nice, but you definitely don't have to be formal, the way you would for an evening show.

Simple. Matinee's usually feature a younger, more casual crowd than evening performances, therefore casual dress is acceptable. For men, a short sleeve collar shirt and jeans, or even shorts, if it is warm out is perfectly fine. For women, a skirt or jeans and a tasteful top would also do the trick. The only thing I would warn against would be sandals or flip flops. Wear normal shoes, tennis shoes even. It's important that you look well-kept no matter what you are wearing too.

You any also want to factor in where your seats are. The more expensive seats, at least at evening performances, usually see men in suits and women in bis casual. The further back in the house you go you seem to see people in much less formal attire. Also take into consideration what kind of show you are seeing. If you are going to see a play off-Broadway or even a musical, to me, people seem to be dressed much more casual than if they were going to a large production, such as Wicked.

Hope that helps

When I first went to see plays on Broadway people dressed well, men with a jacket and women dresses. That was in the 50's and 60's.

Then everything has changed. Now, in the 2000's, you can see men and women in shorts and tennis shoes and t-shirts since they are mostly tourists for matinees and sadly, some of them have bags from the stores.

I guess it would depend on the show, your seats, and if it was Broadway, Off-Broadway, or tour. I saw the nation tour of "The Lion King" last time it was in Nashville. We were near the back of the orchestra section (row W maybe?? somewhere around that) for an afternoon show. I wore khaki pants, and a khaki sweater with a red shirt under it. There were several people dressed up, especially little girls in what looked like their Christmas dresses, but it wasn't too formal.

Anything goes. Some people are coming from dinner and are dressy. Others are fresh off a NYC tour and in casual clothes. My general rule of thumb - always better to be over dressed than underdressed. Also, keep in mind the theaters tend to be quite cold, so take a sweater even in the summer.

Nice black pants & a nice top. No need to be too formal. Its a matinee, not a premier or a night show. Make sure its comfortable too!
