Limewire works and is virus free. It doesn't work with Vista. Limewire does not protect you from downloading viruses and spyware.
Viruses/Spyware
As you are illegally downloading files from strangers, these files may include viruses and malware. Antivirus programs do not detect all viruses. Most antivirus programs can not reliably detect viruses in compressed files.
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/ftc.shtml
"Excerpt from FTC document "P2P File Sharing: Evaluate the Risks: Viruses"
"Use an effective anti-virus program and update it regularly. Files you download could be mislabeled, hiding a virus or other unwanted content. Use anti-virus software to protect your computer from viruses you might pick up from other users through the file-sharing program. Not all anti-virus programs block files downloaded through file-sharing, so check your program's capabilities and settings. In addition, avoid downloading files with extensions like .exe, .scr, .lnk, .bat, .vbs, .dll, .bin, and .cmd."
"LimeWire's response: Viruses
Please be very careful when downloading files with a .exe suffix, since these files can contain a virus or spyware. For security reasons, LimeWire will not download VBS files. LimeWire's Library will not launch .exe, .vbs, .lnk, .bat, .sys, or .com files, although such files can be launched with a program outside of LimeWire. We do recommend the use some sort of virus-protection software to scan any files that are downloaded."

What you should do is use a true-blue music service such as itunes or windows media player and purchase your music there- the 99 cents is worth the piece of mind, if nothing else- and only use limewire in the event that your legal music provider of choice does not have your song. This is what I do. Make SURE to have good antivirus and antispyware protection. I'd suggest Mcafee (pay) or Avast!/AVG (Free) and Spysweeper {pay} Spybot Search and destroy (Free) and adaware (Free)
But the best defense against viruses it to never get one... by avoiding use of Limewire like the plague unless your hand is forced.

I use limewire almost daily, and absolutly love it. If you have Itunes downloading and burning music is a snap. You can also download photos of your favorite celebs, movies, and even programs for your computer. I have been using it for about 3 years now and never had a problem with it, with the exception of somebody listing the wrong artist to a song. If you would like you can contact me at hondab16tuner@yahoo.com and I can help you with any questions you may have about it.

Limewire is very simple to use but can cause your computer to slow down by quite some. Viruses also run rampent on Limewire and your chances of getting one from limewire or pretty big. Limewire opens your computers files to share with others over the net so it also slows down your computer because it adds another task.

Limewire is p2p (peer to peer) program which is basically a free world for people to put on anything they want, its a jungle full or viruses and other malicious software, but if you really want it get it and after downloading something off it clear your computer of any viruses.
But i recommend you not get it.
